Dr. Ahluwalia captivated the audience with his compelling story of perseverance and determination on his journey to becoming a leading orthopedic surgeon. He reminded the students that success stems from their commitment: “It doesn’t matter where you start from; you are driven by your commitment, determination, and focus on your goal.” To those who face doubt, he shared, “You can become whatever you put your mind to. You will be valued by people as much as you value yourself.”
“Being able to hear other people’s stories helped me realize that there are many different paths I can follow to reach my goals and not giving up is the key to success. Thank you for this!" – Valery, 12th grade, Central City Value
"This experience has inspired me to not be afraid to pursue a career in medicine. I should step out of my comfort zone more often and ask questions that can potentially help me." – Evelyn, 11th grade, University Prep Value

Nicole Oparaugo, now a medical student at UCLA, further inspired the students by recounting her path, which included her undergraduate studies at UC Irvine and earning an MBA at USC. As a first-generation Nigerian-American college student, she emphasized her sense of belonging and purpose, saying, “If I got here, I am meant to be here… I feel like I’m making a difference.” Her involvement with an organization providing medical treatment for children in rural China fueled her passion for global health.

“One important concept I learned today is that I need to keep trying even if I feel like I am not doing well. Just keep going and let my dreams stay alive. My journey might change over time but I need to remember to let doors open for more opportunities.” – Valery, 12th grade, Central City Value
